Featured Image

We've got some egg-citing news! Dove season is quickly approaching and the ranch is open for business. Calling all wingshooters of Texas and beyond, Jayhawk Creek Ranch is ready to show you the hunt of a lifetime!

GET IN THE ZONE

To keep Texas as one of the best places in the country to hunt and fish, regular season zone hours, dates, and bag limits vary. The regular season's daily bag limit includes 15 doves with a possession limit of 45. Texas Parks and Wildlife's shooting hours for the 2020-2021 regular season is one-half hour before sunrise to sunset and the dates are as follows:

  • North Zone : Sept. 1, 2021 - Nov. 12, 2021 and Dec. 17, 2021 - Jan. 2, 2022
  • Central Zone : Sept. 1, 2021 - Oct. 31, 2021 and Dec. 17, 2021 - Jan. 14, 2022
  • South Zone : Sept. 14, 2021 - Oct. 31, 2021 and Dec. 17, 2021 - Jan. 21, 2022

Looking for special white-winged doves? Theses doves have earned their own special days during the season. Legal shooting hours for white-winged doves are from noon to sunset and is allowed for hunting on September 3-5 and 10-12 in the year 2021. It's important to note that the daily bag limit can include no more than 2 white-tipped (white-fronted doves).

SCOUTIN' FOR DOVES

A good ole Texas dove hunt usually requires some scouting for their natural habitat. Doves prefer to reside in areas near a reliable food source, with water, and a whole lot of trees. Doves especially love grain crops, making our West-Central Texas hunting prairies the perfect place to scout for doves. And at Jayhawk Creek Ranch, you will be led by experts who know the lay-of-the-land for the best bird hunting.

HIT EM' WITH YOUR BEST SHOT

Start by sharpening your dove huntin' skills by having someone who has done it several times before take you out on a hunt. Although these wingshooters (including our friends at PES in Louisiana) have been honing in on their skills for years you can start warming up on your shooting skills by shooting stationary targets and clay pigeons before you go on a hunt.

KICK IT INTO GEAR

Dove hunting is much easier to enjoy when you have the right gear! The kind of gear you need is dependent upon where you plan to hunt. Dove hunting goes beyond a pair of good boots and a gun for shootin'. Before the season starts, there are a few things you will want to cross off your list for your next dove hunting trip at the ranch. Come see us at the 45th Hunters Extravaganza hunting trade show and make sure your closet is stockedYour essential list should always include:

  • Shotgun shells and ear plugs
  • A good bucket (or chair)
  • A dove/ game belt
  • Extra decoys
  • A camo shirt, hat, & pair of pants with lots of pockets
